Rep.Neugebauer's (Texas) Newsletter

Open email to Rep Neugebauer (Texas):

Dear Rep Neugebauer,
    I have read your newsletter.
With respect to Obamacare, you are right on target. We don't need it. We shouldn't have had it. It does damage to the economy. However, one thing bothers me. You have voted 37 times to repeal and defund Obamacare. Apparently, those votes have been ineffective, since we still have it. Isn't there something more imaginative and effective that you could do to get rid of this law?
You say that this month the House will be working on appropriations bills, which is how we fund the government. In following with the budget plan we passed earlier this year, these spending bills will reduce wasteful spending and take steps to address our deficit. This is a nice motherhood statement, but not only lacks specifics but also lacks intent. May I respectfully remind you that the size of government is completely out of control. We have seen some cuts so that government employment is being slowly reduced, but in my judgment this is insufficient. Congress has been primarily responsible for excessive government growth and particularly the House, because it has been throwing taxpayer money into various government agencies. I would much appreciate your taking some responsibility to start undoing the damage which you have done in building government in the years you have been in office.
You're also hopeful that the House will be again taking up the Farm Bill, and you say that our farmers need long-term policy in place. I agree completely with your statement, but again remind you that based on previous communication, we are completely at odds. Farmers do not need subsidies in the form of outright grants for non-growing nor for crop insurance. Farmers should work within the mechanisms of the existing markets, pay their own way and charge those costs to the products they produce. It is not government's function to subsidize in any form the desire to control consumer prices by hiding the actual cost through use of taxpayer funds. I have also heard in the last few days that the number of persons in the US presently receiving food assistance exceed the number of people employed. To me, this borders on the criminal. Food assistance individuals should have no part of the Farm Bill. It should be put into a Welfare Program, where it will receive the proper attention it deserves. I heard a little talk by Rand Paul on Fox News this morning. He used the term self-reliance. He was applying it to countries, but it is equally applicable to individuals. Would you prefer that we have millions of Americans self-reliant or dependent on government for food?
On immigration, the Senate is way off the mark in its passage of its Immigration Bill, in spite of the knowledgeable efforts of Sen. Cruz. I strongly suggest that you try to influence the House to come up with a completely new approach in its consideration of a House Bill. I suggest you look at what Sen. Cruz's had to say about the Senate bill, in order to more properly direct your attention in the House.
As an afterthought, you said the House would continue oversight and investigation of the Obama Administration. You will be asking more questions about the IRS, reining in the Environmental Protection Agency’s overreach on issues like the Lesser Prairie Chicken, and working to stop the government’s abuses of power. As part of that effort, you recently signed on to a resolution calling for the resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder. These are all good moves. If we can't move Pres. Obama out of office, the next best operation is to harass his administration, which will hopefully keep it so busy that it will reduce the rate at which it has been damaging our economy and country.
