Ocean Shipping Rates

EIN News says, "Shipping Rates Seen Falling 50% As China Cuts Imports And New Ships Enter Market. Just as global trade starts to recover, the shipping market is crashing for the second time in a year as China reduces raw-material imports and record numbers of new vessels set sail. (bloomberg.com)".
Ocean shipping is private enterprise. I suggest the government not meddle with it. If investors misjudged the continuity of the market, they need to suffer consequence of the risk they knew was present. On the positive side, the market will always ultimately correct itself. In this case, reduced shipping costs will encourage more transoceanic shipping, probably to the advantage of the public at large. With a surplus of oceangoing vessels, production of new vessels can be temporarily reduced to the advantage of saving assets. Some of the surplus vessels can also be converted to other operations. Have faith in market forces, not in government adjustments.
If government insists on doing something for transoceanic shipping, let it be wiping out the Somalia and other pirates. This would be consistent with Constitutional requirements.

Need for Major Projects

EIN News says, "EU Says Nearly 1 in 5 Young Europeans Can't Find Work As Recession Deepens. Nearly one in five young Europeans could not find a job in the first three months of this year as the region sank into the worst recession in 60 years, the EU statistics agency Eurostat said Thursday. (latimes.com)".
"The Next 'Moon Landing?' Norway Plans Deep-sea CO2 Storage. Can the North Sea basin hold all of the carbon dioxide in Europe? Norway certainly hopes so. At a high-level conference in Bergen last month, the oil-rich Nordic nation announced that it will work with Britain to study how the base of the North Sea could be used for carbon dioxide storage for European countries. It will also allocate nearly $200 million toward carbon capture and storage projects in the European Union. (csmonitor.com)"

The above two news items are related.
The employment problem in Europe (and also the US) results from a lack of major projects, on which labor depends. The deficiency of these major projects is the fault of both industry and government. Major projects result from an understanding of public needs and desires, imagination, and determination to accomplishment. For example, the US national rail system followed by Interstate roads were major projects.
While the Norway plan for Deep-sea CO2 Storage may create employment, the project itself will not contribute to the maintenance and improvement of lifestyle for European citizens. There will be temporary relief as funds are distributed to employees and wage earners, but the basic economic value of the project will not be there, and this deficiency will also be eventually felt.
The Pyramids were a major project using tremendous amounts of labor. However, the project contained no economic advantage. Perhaps this contributed to Egypt's decline as a world economic leader. A lesson to be learned is that one should not squander assets on non-productive ventures. While the implication is for individuals, it is obvious that it would also apply to corporations and government.

Controlling Congress

8/1/09
E-mail to Congress:

CNN showed a three-member discussion panel this morning. One of the members was a historian. The discussion subject involved Pres. Obama's greatest successes and greatest failures in his first 200 days in office.
The panel basically agreed that present Obama's greatest success was his ability to communicate with and convince the American public.
At least two of the panel members strongly agreed that Pres. Obama's greatest failure was his inability to CONTROL Congress.
It seems to me that if a President has the ability to CONTROL Congress and the Supreme Court, we no longer would have a Republic, but would have a Dictatorship.
I ask for your continued efforts to not allow Pres. Obama to control you and your votes in Congress. I ask that you exercise your rights of personal liberty in coming to your own decisions based on your judgment and coincident with the electorate, who you represent.

Nazi History

8/3/09
Nazi is a short term for the National Socialist German Worker's Party (NSDAP). The Party took over the German government in 1933. The new government installed a totalitarian dictatorship in a series of measures in quick succession (from Wikipedia).
I encourage you to concentrate on the terms "worker's party" and "socialist" in the NSDAP name. Workers parties are a group of workers whose primary objective is increasing their wages and benefits. Workers parties are by definition socialistic. Note also that the socialistic aspect lasted only for a very short time as Hitler quickly became the totalitarian dictator. Once Hitler had the support of the people, the German Reichstag no longer had power.
There is a clear analogy of the German history with the present US political situation. Pres. Obama by his personal charisma and his ability for oratory has the clear support of the American public, as did Hitler in Germany. Pres. Obama has also passed a series of socialistic measures in quick succession.
Will the U.S. Congress become a football for president Obama, as did the German Reichstag for Hitler? There may be time for Congress to do something about it, while they still have some power.
50 million people died in Europe, many of whom were Americans, to wipe out the "worker's socialist program", but 60 years later it is again rising in a slightly different form much like the many heads of the "Hydra" of Greek mythology.

First Amendment Rights

My government is forcing me to help buy my neighbors new cars. Government has a nice catchy phrase called, "Cash for clunkers".
If that isn't socialism, please explain to me what socialism is.
If you wonder how I am "forced", the answer is that I must pay a portion of the cost of all the new cars purchased by neighbors. I pay through Federal Income Tax. If I do not pay, I will be fined, or imprisoned, or both. I also pay through the decreased value of my dollar assets, because the federal government excessively prints new dollars. I have no control over this inflation.
This is a sad state of affairs. I have been continually losing portions of my personal liberties. Now I am increasingly losing my personal assets, for which I have worked hard many years.
Can you do something about this obviously unfair situation?

Cash for Clunkers

Sen. Hutchison says on her website, "After listening to all sides of this issue, I must vote against another $2 billion for the ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program. Whatever short-term gain we might receive from this spending is more than outweighed by the long-term debt and financial burden we are passing on to future generations. We don’t even have a report on how much has been spent on this program, nor reliable estimates of future requirements. It would be irresponsible to pass on another $2 billion with so little information."
I agree with her wholeheartedly on this issue. However, I have asked her what she is going to do about it. Her mere statement of disapproval will not deter the Obama Administration. They will zip ahead with their program, no matter what you or Sen. Hutchison think about it.
Does Congress have any power left to control a Presidential Administration instituting a number of irresponsible programs, or has Congress become a rubber stamp?

First Amendment Rights

E-mail to Congress:

Glenn Beck shows on YouTube that if one logs into cars.gov on the Internet, one can make application for the "Cash for Clunkers" rebate.
One of the conditions of the application is acceptance of the following:
"This application provides access to the DOT Cars system. When logged onto the Cars system, your computer is considered a Federal computer system and is the property of the US government. Any or all uses of the system and all files on this system may be intercepted, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected, and disclosed to authorize Cars DOT and law enforcement personnel, as well as authorized officials of other agencies, both domestic and foreign."
Please look at this detailed wording and see if it doesn't bother you.
