Rep. Neugebauer's Newsletter

Open e-mail to Rep. Neugebauer:

Dear Rep. Neugebauer,
Thanks for your Roundup newsletter, in which you covered two points.
You discussed the drought, farm bill, renewable energy, all of which are related to agriculture. These are details which can occupy all of us, but which have only a Band-Aid effect on our basic problem, which is susceptibility to weather and particularly to rainfall limitations.
As you well know, irrigated cotton does well here in West Texas, but only through use of the Ogallala, which has its limitations. We need a massive irrigation project of either carrying fresh water from the Great Lakes to the Southwest or desalination of seawater from the Pacific or the Gulf of Mexico. Such irrigation would be a tremendous job but also of tremendous benefit. It is also within the realm of practicality, since of the technology for use of desalination where necessary, is available along with massive earth moving equipment for pipe laying and re-contouring the land. Sooner or later, such a project will be necessary, starting now. Let's get on the ball and stop fiddling around with crop insurance, government guarantees and such items that contribute no benefit to the overall problem.
Secondly, you talk about the economy and particularly the national debt and overspending by the federal government. My question is simple: What are you actually doing to correct it, other than acquiescence talk?
